The sources for Pidyon Nefesh in the Torah and the Sages
The foundation of Pidyon Nefesh is the power of charity, which appears many times in the Torah and the words of the Sages:
«And charity saves from death» – so wrote King Solomon in the Book of Proverbs (chapter 10), and from here the Sages learned that charity protects a person even from real danger.
Four things tear up a person’s decree – the Gemara in Tractate Rosh Hashanah (16b) says that charity, crying out (prayer), changing one’s name and changing one’s deeds tear up the decree.
«And repentance, prayer and charity avert the severity of the decree» – as we say every year in the «Unetaneh Tokef» prayer on the High Holidays.
In Pidyon Nefesh, charity, the prayer of a Torah scholar and the Torah learning that the money supports are joined together. It is important to remember that salvation comes from Hashem, so it is good to add personal prayer and a good resolution to the Pidyon.
Why 160 coins – and why specifically silver?
The Torah says “for man is the tree of the field”, and “tree” (etz) has the numerical value 160. It also says “for in the image of G-d He made man”, and “image” (tzelem) is also 160. By the power of the money, the decree is annulled from the image, the tree and the man – and so the decrees and judgments resting on a person are annulled.
The Pidyon is done specifically with silver, because according to the Kabbalah silver represents the attribute of mercy, in contrast to gold, which represents the attribute of judgment.
Who is it recommended for? For everyone – at least once a year, for oneself and one’s family, even when all is well, thank G-d, and especially when there is difficulty in some area of life. In some cases several Pidyonot are needed to fully resolve the problem.

What is a Pidyon Nefesh?
A rectification whose special quality is to remove decrees from a person and open their fortune for the good in many areas – healing, a match, children, shalom bayit, livelihood and success.
What is the difference between Pidyon Nefesh and the full Pidyon Nefesh?
A Pidyon Nefesh is performed with 160 coins – ₪160 per name. In the full Pidyon Nefesh, coins equal to the gematria of the person’s personal name are added. For example, for David (gematria 14): 160 + 14 = ₪174. The amount is calculated automatically in the form.

Why 160 silver coins?
“Etz” (tree) and “tzelem” (image) have the numerical value 160, and silver represents the attribute of mercy. After the rectification, the money is donated to charity to support the institutions.
Can a Pidyon be done for several family members?

How often is it worth doing a Pidyon?
It is recommended at least once a year for oneself and one’s family, even when all is well, and especially when there is difficulty. Some cases require several Pidyonot.
Can I do a Pidyon Nefesh for someone else?
Yes. It is very common to do a Pidyon for a sick person, a family member or a friend. Give their name and their mother’s name, and the merit stands for them.
Does a Pidyon Nefesh replace medical treatment?
Certainly not. The Torah says «and he shall surely heal», from which the Sages learned that a doctor is permitted to heal. The Pidyon and prayer come together with medical treatment, not instead of it.
What is the difference between Pidyon Nefesh and regular charity?
Every Pidyon is charity, but in a Pidyon the charity is given with the explicit intention of sweetening a particular judgment, and the Rabbi performs a rectification and prays for the person by name.
Is the donation tax-deductible?
Yes, in Israel. Karvenu L’Avodatecha (registered nonprofit 580508836) is recognized for tax purposes under Section 46, and the receipt is sent by Nedarim Plus.
